Customer Reviews

Crummy plastic ice trays split and leak in pretty short orderCrummy plastic ice trays split and leak in pretty short order, and who knows what chemicals are in them - these are the reasons I bought the stainless steel trays. After almost 5 months of use: they work great, no more splits, leaks or chemicals, they're sturdy and do what they should do.Protips:- Fill the tray nearly to the top with water, then put in the divider. Easier to fill that way. Plus, larger cubes are easier to remove than smaller ones.- It can be difficult to get the ice out. Run water over the bottom of the frozen tray first to make it a little easier. (But only a little.) Letting it melt for just a couple minutes first helps too, if you have that kind of time.4Appears to be quality made, yet has a short lifespan due to non-mechanical issues...Upon first receiving this item, I was impressed with the quality of manufacture. The breaking mechanism was solidly constructed and the overall weight/feel of the entire unit was solid as well. After some trial and error on how high to fill, running water on the bottom of the tray before pulling the breaking lever, etc., I was satisfied with the functionality of the tray (although, you shouldn't expect nice neat cubes, you'll definitely get a mix of decent cubes and broken cubes-- but ice is ice, right?). Unfortunately, after only 1.5 months of use (.5 longer than would allow for returning it), I noticed that the ice cubes started tasting like metal. The tray was only washed once with Dawn dish liquid before initial use, and then nothing else touched the tray with the exception of filtered water to make the cubes. I have no idea why a stainless product should cause the ice to taste like metal when it was essentially brand new and hadn't been exposed to anything that would tarnish/break down the surface in any way. Given that I mostly use the cubes for iced water, the tray has essentially been rendered useless as the metal taste completely distorts the taste of the water. Major bummer because I thought I would love this item... :/1So disappointed with the quality! :-(I really wanted to make my own plastic-free ice cubes but am so, so disappointed in this product. I followed instructions for use, being careful to let the ice thaw slightly before breaking (note: the tip to run water on the underside tended to result in ice cubes in the sink). With a 20-buck price tag, the product should have lasted for years, yet it become inoperable after only a few tentative uses. I put the louvers back on the tracks, but metal lever doesn't move anything anymore. My parents had the aluminum version for decades, so the technology is out there; why can't this one work? I want a new tray or my money back!1Super Easy to Open - INITIALLY...Totally LOVE this tray! It arrived yesterday and today I "opened" it for the first time - Super Easy! I did run a little water on the bottom first, per other reviews, but it wasn't all that warm and I didn't run it for all that long. I flipped the tray over and with almost no force whatsoever was able to easily pull the lever open to "crack" the ice. It really was astonishingly easy. I have arthritis in my thumbs and it has become harder and harder for me to get ice cubes out of plastic trays which require all kinds of twisting. I am delighted to have an ice tray I can use easily with no strain to my hands or thumbs and will be ordering a second unit. And a pleasant, kind of fun bonus is that these trays seem to be exact replicas of the stainless steel ice trays I remember from when I was a kid.UPDATE: It is now September and one ice tray no longer works at all and the second one is probably about to go. The lever won't go all the way down anymore. The first one stopped working - the dividers no longer line up correctly and moving the lever no longer moves the dividers rendering the unit useless. Sad because these are such cool trays but I guess I'll have to go back to plastic.2Endurance Brand not as good as Onyx Brand Bought 1 Endurance and 1 Onyx brand ice cube about a year ago. After 5 weeks, I could not get the handle, on the Endurance brand, to go all the way back down to the tray. The Endurance brand is flimsier than the Onyx brand even though they both say they are 18/8 stainless steel. In my opinion, the Onyx brand is better quality. Tip: Let the ice tray sit on the counter for a few minutes before trying to lift the handle. I appreciate using stainless steel over plastic to make ice cubes. 1Not Worth The MoneyI bought this ice cube tray, trusting I wouldn't need to keep buying ice cube trays that break within months. Alas, this is not the case with this item. It lasted ok for a little over 6 months but now is impossible to use. Piece of junk if you ask me. Amazon won't replace after 30 days so I am out $20 and not a happy camper.1I like it but it didn't hold its shape.I like the product but it didn't hold its shape. Maybe I did something wrong or this is normal? The bottom developed a large bulge.3I remember the aluminum trays of years gone by and they worked like charm until the world went to automatic ice makers ...An expensive mistake. The trays where a little twisted (poor production QC) and n matter what we tried the ice would shatter when the handle was pulled. I remember the aluminum trays of years gone by and they worked like charm until the world went to automatic ice makers (that cost us two floor repairs when they crapped out). Since then all we can find is plastic trays which crack over time. What has this world come to!1BEST Ice cube tray you can buy!GREAT ICE TRAY!!! Better than Onyx. I switched to Stainless steel when I heard the warnings about plastic/BPA. In 3 years I bought 3 Onyx brand ice cube trays... 2 of them are in the trash now. Although they seem sturdy, they are hard to crack the ice and eventually break apart. So when I had to buy yet another one, I switched to this Endurance Brand. WOW! It seems a little more shallow, so maybe that helps the ice from getting too thick to crack. But it is SO EASY to crack the ice! I have run it through about 4 or 5 cycles.. freezing and cracking the ice, and very little force is needed. (The trick to any metal ice tray is to run water on the bottom to keep the ice from sticking as you try to crack it.) The metal tray freezes better, doesn't absorb odors like plastic trays, so the ice tastes fresh and clean... not like the onions in your fridge or whatever. We love the ice that comes out of it! A little expensive, but I love it and am ordering another as soon as I finish this review. Hope this helps someone!5Not well constructed -- didn't last! When I received this stainless steel ice tray I was pleased at it's appearance and that it looked well constructed. I purchased this tray because I wanted to use my own filtered water for making better quality ice cubes. Used this tray approximately once a week for 9 months before the lever broke. I'm very disappointed in it's performance considering how much it cost.1It simply will not release iceI grew up using 12 to 14 cube aluminum Ice trays. When I ordered the SS 18 cube stainless tray, I thought Stainless Steel would be an improvement. Boy was I wrong! I will NEVER EVER buy another triple row metal ice tray nor a Stainless Tray ever again! It is almost an impossible task to get the middle row of cubes out unless you use a knife to pound them out! Stainless steel also as it turns out has an affinity to ice & bonds to it unlike aluminum which would release rather easily by comparison (going back 40 years in my memory when I last used aluminum trays). Note: I stopped using aluminum trays because they would not stack in my small freezer at the time. And YES you need to run metal trays under the water to get ice to release normally regardless if aluminum or not. Well I am returning this tray.. sad it seems like almost every metal tray made not is tripple row. I am forced to going back to Rubbermaid plastic trays. Do not waste your money buying a stainless tripple row ice tray.1
