Customer Reviews

The Reading Never Changes No Matter the Soil Type This meter never changes no matter the type of soil. It always reads a 7 when I know that certain of my soils are a lower pH.UPDATE: I contacted Amazon Customer Service and they gave me a full refund and told me to dispose of the PH Meter.I am very happy with Amazon's customer service. 1Pretty much comes very oxidized. If you get it clean enough, it will work. It pretty much comes to you completely oxidized. You have to really clean it to get it to work. That little green scratchy cloth is truly useless. I ended up using a little Bon Ami to get it clean. It says not to use abrasives on the tip...Ignore this. USE ABRASIVES on the tip, especially. The tip should be as bright and shiny as new stainless steel. Keep using an abrasive until it is. THEN, and ONLY then will it work.I tested it in White Distilled vinegar and got a 5 reading. The vinegar I used is acually diluted to a 5% acidity, so it works....IF you get it clean enough. 3Great Soli Ph Tester This works very good and is actually quite inexpensive. Other reviewers have stated that the tester does not give an accurate reading and I found this to be false after I performed my own test. I was not getting the reading I was expecting in the soil, so I tested the unit in 100% vinegar. The reading was the same in the vinegar as it was in the soil I checked 6.9 - 7.0 and knowing this to be highly unlikely, I stuck the probe way down deep into the vinegar and got a different reading, a very acidic reading which was exactly as expected. The issue here is that the probe has to be submerged deep into the soil (up closer to the handle). If the tip is not placed deep into the soil, the tester will give a false inaccurate reading. Clean and dry off properly per instructions after each use. Hope this helps with everybody purchasing this tester! 5ESSENTIAL GARDENING TOOL read many reviews online and ended up going with this brand and model. i amend my soil as most hobbiest to serious gardners do, i wanted to have a quick reference for hot spots (too acid or alkaline), when i notice a problem area or bald spot in my garden as to have a pH reference point. i have tested this against litmus paper and add soil to solution type tests and results very, very similar. i am not trying to be an agricultural chemist and for the money, this tool has been very helpful to me in my home vegetable gardening endeavors. i make sure and keep the tip clean and follow directions (not for liquids) and it has served me well. when stored in a ziploc, the indicator stays at a neutral 7 which is what i expect from it. i recommend testing on damp to dry soil as too much water will affect your readings. i reserve the upgrade to 5 stars until it makes it through the warranty period then i will update. i had a few areas in my garden that were struggling or no germination/poor growth and this little jewel showed me that a 5 pH existed. i amended to correct, indicator showed 6.5 and i now have no problems with these areas. i literally grow asparagus - zucchini and my yields are good enough to feed my wife and i, can some, and give some away to the neighbors with just a small home garden. i encourage everyone to get on board with grow your own.7/18/12 Well gardners, still working like a charm and thanks to some fortunate rain this year, yields have been good enough to give to our neighbors and we are canning now...will turn over to fall stuff soon...pH meter helped me again this year when i had problem with one of my large potted gardens which revealed a 7.8 pH which is much higher than usual and i composted well in those large pots and it was enough to correct. once versed in the pH readings and the corrective amendments, you are on your way...now, start retrieving your own seeds and heirloom them...enjoy your successes as well as failures and grow what makes you happy! i will now upgrade this model to a 5 Star rating.4/9/13 ~ getting ready for spring plant, and the pH meter is still working like a charm. hope everyone has a great yield this year and a great time doing it. 5good, cheap, accurate I was very skeptical about buying this little guy to check my soil ph/moisture after reading reviews, but after looking at others it seems that no soil ph tester has good reviews so I decided to give it a shot. It works great for me, I also ordered strip test too to test accuracy and it's right on the money. As far as the reviews saying the probes on tester break easy....are you people trying to test the ph of concrete? I'm not gentle with mine, just stick it in the soil and turn it to either setting and bingo.I can't speak for these other guys, but it does clearly say to test soil not liquids in the instructions. Yeah, I know like most people I wasn't going to read em either but after reading these reviews I thought to myself, maybe these bad reviews could be user error? Clearly that was the case. I try to take reviews with a grain of salt anyway.I tested my plants soil before and it was WAYYY too acidic (miracle grow), as I thought. I replanted with FF ocean forest which is suppose to be neutral and when I tested my soil again, sure enough it was. Now my plants are doing great! Moisture test works well too, keeps me from over-watering. 5Great tool for hobby gardeners For less than 12 bucks (at the time this review was written) you get a compact soil tester that measures pH, fertilizer levels, light and moisture - sounds like the kind of thing that is broken right out of the box or works once and then never again, right? Not in this case - the rapitest unit is relatively sturdy and appears to be made with some regard for quality.Of course, you should not expect it to survive many nights outside in the rain, nor will you get the kind of results that NASA would require for a zero-g botany experiment, but for a casual gardener with a few temperamental indoor plants this is a perfect little tool. It will give you a rough idea of how your little patch of soil is doing and can assist you in diagnosing why specific plants seem to be struggling. The most useful setting is the pH tester which gives a acidity/alkalinity reading without using testing strips or dyes. The fertility setting is calibrated for a specific set of ppm for N, K and Phosphorous (these are listed in the instructions) - also useful if you know the mineral requirements of your individual plants. The instructions included with the unit are printed on a single sheet of paper and are easy to follow. Step by step directions for using each setting are given. On a side note: I'm not going to risk cracking my unit open but my guess is that this device works by measuring the flow of electric current and bases the results on pre-calibrated resistances. This means there is a battery in there somewhere that will eventually conk out. 5Know your stats! This testing tool, helped identify some areas that I needed to improve in. My wife and I are starting to use grow lights to over winter a clementine and avocado tree, so having a tool that helped show us what we needed to adjust. This was so much more simple than using capsule style testing and provided much more diagnostics. 5Not really reliable or useful product I thought the reviewers who had bad experience were just had bad luck with a defective device until I got mine and am disappointed also. It is either defective or not sensitive enough to provide reliable information. I mainly bought it to test PH level and fertility but will provide info for all the features.1. Fertility: I think this test is a joke. It only has 3 readings for too little, idea and too much. Firstable, plants need different ratio of NPP to grow vigorously and healthy. The 3 readings are not suitable to grade soil fertility and actually misleading. Secondly, I have fertilizer, organic compost applied periodically around plants and most of my plants grow crazily and huge but the reading shows "too little" fertility! Test 1 of this device fails miserably.2. PH: Default is set at 7 and never really move, no matter it is on more acidity soil for berries and tomatoes or more alkaline soil for spinach. My soil is probably on the acid side while I grow squash, bean, onion, scallion, chard, potato, tomato, grapes etc successfully with monster size but spinach doesn't event sprout and asparagus is thin and small. I want to know the soil ph and adjust to more alkaline for spinach but this device fails to show different ph properly.3. Moisture: The scale is 1 to 10 from dry to 10. If the surface is visibly dry, the device shows 0 at dry level. Plug it to visibly moisturized area, it shows 4. It seems to work on moisture but it doesn't work better than my eyes!4. Light: It has an index of 1 to 10. The needle moves to 6-7 in green house. It works but I guess I don't really need it to tell me. 2and the plants in my gardens now rest more easily. I couldn't be happier with this instrument in ... I am a new but enthusiastic gardening enthusiast. Sadly, I have brought a lot of "herb-icide" to my new project mostly due to over-watering. This tool has helped me turn my thumb more green, and the plants in my gardens now rest more easily. I couldn't be happier with this instrument in terms of price, speed of delivery (the surviving plants I am sure are pleased also), ease of use. I, and my plants, thank you. 5the unit i got is really pretty junky. the fertility gauge is worthless the unit i got is really pretty junky. the fertility gauge is worthless. it doesn't tell you what specific nutrient you are deficient. to use the probes - for all tests you have to stick them in all the way to the base of the unit - about 6 inches. so, if you have small pots with plants you're "out of luck'. the scales or gradations are so small they are hard to read. not sure if the moisture meter is accurate. i have a separate moisture meter only unit and, the readings of both (placed in same area of plant pot) do not jive 2
